Alexander-Arnold: Klopp told me about World Cup call-up

The uncapped full-back has been named in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man panel for the Russia 2018 after an impressive campaign at Anfield

Trent Alexander-Arnold was given slightly special treatment following his World Cup call-up, with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp enlisted to tell him the good news.

Uncapped full-back Alexander-Arnold has earned his first international call-up for the tournament in Russia as part of Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad.

Most players received the news of their place in the squad from Southgate himself, with Manchester City’s Kyle Walker even revealing on Wednesday that he missed the Three Lions boss’ call.

But fellow defender Alexander-Arnold instead learned of his shock call-up from Klopp, who ensured the teenager has no other plans for the summer.

“I found out this morning, just before we came out to Marbella,” he told Liverpool’s official website. “The manager came and spoke to me just as we were getting on the plane.

“He asked me if I knew anything about the squad or anything yet. I said, ‘no’ and he said, ‘Have you got anything planned around the time of the World Cup?’ I was like, ‘No, no holidays or anything…’.

“He said to me, ‘OK, good… You’re in the squad!’ It was a really proud moment. On England’s behalf, it was nice of them to let the manager tell me.”

Klopp has mentored the youngster throughout his time at Liverpool, with Alexander-Arnold impressing during the Reds’ run to the Champions League final.

Alexander-Arnold is one of two Liverpool players in the squad alongside Reds captain Jordan Henderson, with injury having ruled out both Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joe Gomez while Adam Lallana only made the standby list.
