ASUU Strike: Lecturers Reach Agreement With Nigerian Govt On Some Contentious Issues

Confusion As ASUU Denies Issuing Strike Notice To Nigerian Gov’t
The striking university lecturers of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have agreed to consider the federal government’s offer and suspend their strike.

Although it has accepted the proposal presented by the federal government, the leadership of ASUU, however, said that it will take the proposal to its members and get back to the government in a week.

It is understood that the meeting, which began on Thursday, September 7, around 1.30pm, ended around 11pm as both parties were initially reluctant to shift grounds on some contentious issues.

Biodun Ogunyemi, the national president of ASUU, told newsmen after the meeting that the union will come back after one week to take its final decisions.

“Now we have some concrete proposal that we will take back to our members for consideration,” he said.

It was gathered that a memorandum of understanding was signed by both ASUU and the federal government during the meeting.

On his part, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, previously identified the contentious issues as earned academic allowances and the revitalisation of public universities.

“Most of the issues between the government and the union have already been dealt with. The two most important and contentious issues are the earned allowances and the revitalisation of university system.

“We have already reached an agreement on one and we hope to reach an agreement on the other,” the minister added.

In attendance on the government’s side were the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige; the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu; and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka.

The ASUU nine-man delegation was led by the union President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi.
