Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has lamented the loss of huge revenue by the state to illegal collectors.
The governor disclosed this during a crucial meeting with market leaders, saying that government would no longer tolerate the activities of illegal revenue collectors.
Obiano explained that it had become imperative for government to embark on the operation to salvage the ugly situation that had discouraged buyers from patronizing markets across the State because of the activities of illegal tax collectors.
He said, as the Chief Security Officer of the State, he has the responsibility of not only battling crimes and criminality but also protecting the street traders who run their businesses from being fleeced by these illegal tax collectors.
The Governor observed with dismay , the spate of illegal revenue collections and extortion of buyers in the markets, which he noted had very negative indices for his administration’s efforts at creating a business -friendly environment in the State.
He further frowned at the diversion of approved levies by some market leaders, stressing that the meeting was important to sound a note of warning before government starts enforcement.
The Governor revealed that his government has made alternative arrangements for the relocation of sellers of fruits and other items that constituted the bulk of the street traders, to a safer place as part of the enforcement on the ban on street trading in the state.
He emphasized that it was in the best interest of the State that sanity was entrenched in the state’s business operations.
