Leicester report racist abuse of midfielder Choudhury to police

Leicester City have reported alleged racist abuse of 22-year-old midfielder Hamza Choudhury to the police following their Premier League clash with Liverpool on Saturday.

Choudhury, who is of mixed Bengali and Caribbean descent, was targeted for abuse on social media after a rough challenge on Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.

A Leicester spokesman said: “We are appalled by these comments, which the club has reported to the police and to the social media platform on which they were made.

“Discriminatory behaviour has no place in football or in society and we will seek the strongest possible course of action to be taken against those responsible.”

Salah was substituted before James Milner’s controversial late penalty sealed a 2-1 win for Liverpool, who maintained their 100 per cent record at the start of the Premier League season.

The incident drew the ire of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who praised Choudhury’s development at the Foxes but made no attempt to hide his displeasure with the tackle.

His opposite number, former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, defended his player for what he saw as a full-blooded challenge between two players moving at top speed.

“The emotion of the game, it might seem worse than it was,” Rodgers said. “He is an honest boy, Hamza. He makes challenges, he’s aggressive, but I don’t think there was anything malicious.”

Racist abuse against footballers on social media has been in the spotlight recently, with Twitter working with Premier League clubs to try and protect players from discrimination.

Choudhury’s debut for Leicester came just over two years ago against Liverpool, in a 2-0 Carabao Cup win in 2017.

He has since made more than 30 appearances for the club, and has impressed so far this season as a regular in Rodgers’ entertaining side.

One of few British-Asians currently playing in the top four tiers of English football, Choudhury has played a number of times for England’s Under-21 side and was part of the team which won the Toulon Tournament in 2018.

At Leicester since the beginning of his youth career, he has also spent time on loan with Burton Albion in League One and the Championship.
