Reverend Father Cyriacus Onunkwo, a Catholic priest in Imo state, has been murdered by unknown gunmen 24 hours after he was kidnapped.

According to the Imo state police, Father Cyriacus Onunkwo was allegedly snatched from his vehicle in Orlu town in Orlu Local Government Area on Friday morning by gunmen.

Imo state Police Commissioner, Chris Ezike, told Channels TV that following a manhunt, a body was discovered in the bush Omuma Village in Orlu East Local Government Area on Saturday.

Priests of Orlu Catholic Diocese were called in immediately and they identified the corpse as their priest, Father Onunkwo, while investigations are still on to unveil his killers.

According to the Imo police boss:

“Although we are working on all leads over the matter. For now, it is a clear case of abduction and murder. If it was a case of kidnapping, his captives would have put a call across to anybody close their victim and made a demand”, Ezike said.
Police say the late cleric’s car was discovered intact, with nothing removed from it. Neither did the body bear any gunshot or stab wounds, leading to speculations that he may have been strangled.

No arrests have so far been made, but CP Ezike says that the police are still working to find the abductors of the priest.
