Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo who is popularly known as DJ Black Coffee or Black Coffee was born on March 11, 1976. He was born in Durban South Africa and brought up as a Christian.

When he was just 12 years old, his father left his mother and he had to look after himself. DJ Black Coffee later moved from his birth city with his mother to Mathata. He later moved to Ngangelizwe town in Umtata where he attended the Durban University of Technology previously called Technikon Natal. He has a major in Jazz from this school.
