Its no news that fraudsters are no longer that successful on the international front duping foreigners of their hard earned money through the internet as almost all the social media and chatting apps now have video calls that enable people to see eachother as they chat. Former victims of these fraudsters are now using this means to know genuine individuals online as we can now request to have a video chat with everyone we are chatting with.
Though it hasn’t succeeded 100% in curbing online fraudulent activities, it has gone a long way to hinder the activities of these fraudsters so they have taken their operations to using people information they get via their missing phones and Sim Cards most especially to debit their bank accounts. Why its advisable to not have your banking details on your Sim Card. A lady complained online sometines ago that she forgot her phone on a tricycle she joined on her way home from work and didn’t notice it until she got home. When she noticed it immediately she got home, she tried calling it but to no avail, so she decided she will go to the nearest customer service center of her sim network provider the next day and in the process retrieve her sim card. She did as planned the next day getting a new phone after successfully retrieving her sim card, she decided to visit an ATM and collect money to take care of some thing only to find out her account balance was insufficient. She tried several times and got thesame reply so she decided to check her account balance, to her greatest surprise her account balance that was three hundred and something k Naira only had just a thousand Naira and some fractions of Kobo. She fainted and was immediately rushed to the hospital.
On recovery, she visited her bank and was told the transactions occured that same day she lost her phone. A lot of stories like that of this woman has made the internet since then, so there is need to protect your sim card incase you lost your phone or your sim card gets to the wrong hands. Here are steps to protect your sim against such actions:
IF YOU DO MOBILE BANKING from your phone, there is need to put a PIN on your SIM, otherwise your account can be wiped clean anytime you lose your phone or your phone is stolen. The process to do it is very simple but if ignored can cost your all Your life savings.

For those who don’t know about it yet, just follow this simple steps to protect hacking of Your bank account through SIM THEFT Or SIM swap/Fraud.
- Go to SETTINGS in Your phone.
- Go to SECURITY & LOCATION under SETTINGS
- Go to SIM CARD LOCK.
- Click on LOCK SIM CARD ( if you are using a multiple Sim phone, sellect the sim you want to lock. As seen in the illustration photo below, am locking my MTN Sim Card ).
- Enter Your mobile network default SIM CARD PIN.
*For MTN users it is “00000”. *For AIRTEL users it is “1111”.
*For 9mobile users it is “0000”
* For GLO users, it is “0000”
- After entering the MOBILE NETWORK DEFAULT PIN, under it You will see ” CHANGE SIM PIN”, click on it to change to Your unique 4 digit pin for the other networks and 5 digits for MTN.
- Confirm Your unique 4 digit pin and 5 digits for MTN users, by entering it again & YOU ARE DONE.
So anytime You “remove sim from Your phone” You will be prompted to enter Your SIM CARD PIN just as You will be prompted to enter Your phone lock PIN or Draw Your PATTERN each time You “START” (ON) Your phone.
With the ACTIVATION OF SIM LOCK on Your phone, Your money can never be withdrawn from Your bank account through your SIM because Your SIM will be useless in their hands since it is blocked and You will not be under tension to go and block or retrieve Your stolen SIM.
Note, dont use your date of birth or that of your children or any relative that can be easily gotten online. Choose unique numbers you can easily remember. I have seen a confession video of a fraudster arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commision ( EFCC ) for Sim related fraud, on which he confessed they use the date of birth of their victims alot of the times to hack into their bank account and ATM as it is mostly used by individuals.
